City of Bristol Parks, Recreation, Youth & Community Services hosts 23rd Annual Turkey Shoot Basketball Contest
Local Bristol youth and community members had the opportunity to participate in an exciting competition on Saturday November 7th for the 23rd Annual Turkey Shoot Basketball Contest held outside at both Page Park and Stocks Playground basketball courts. The Turkey Shoot is a highly popular event where guardian and child duos compete in basketball foul shooting contests for a chance to win a $25 gift card to purchase a turkey along with other great prizes. Participants were placed into divisions based on the age of the child and their age further dictated the location where they would be participating. Divisions were broken down into 4-5 years old, 6-7 years old, 8-9 years old, 10-11 years old and 12-13 years old.
Bristol department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth & Community Services (BPRYCS) warned community members the annual event would look slightly different this year. The department’s Recreation Supervisor, Amry Shelby, noted “We reached out to all registered participants prior to the event and communicated the event’s agenda and outlined the changes that would be made in light of COVID precautions.” Traditionally, the Turkey shoot is held indoors at the Chippens Hill Middle School gym. However, Saturday’s rare 70 degree weather proved no match for the transition outdoors. While the sun shined for the duration of the event, participants were asked to social distance and wait off the court after registering. Once the participants were screened for COVID, each pair was called up individually to take their foul shots. Additionally, each pair was given the opportunity to take three bonus shots from anywhere on the court.
Despite the changes, the 23rd Annual Turkey Shoot was a huge success with over 60 participants across all of the age divisions and lots of talent. The competition was fierce but check out the winners of each category below and the exciting prize they took home for their skills on the court:

Thanks to Price Chopper, the first pair in each age division took home a $25 gift card to purchase a turkey. Raffle prizes and complementary registration basketballs were made possible by the department’s generous sponsors at Dick’s Sporting Goods, ESPN, Firehouse Subs, and Sparetime Entertainment. Shelby reflected, “Our department was beyond excited to host the 23rd Annual Turkey Shoot this year, and want to extend a congratulations to all of this year’s
winners. In a time where there is so much uncertainty, it was our goal to keep this fantastic tradition going. The successful implementation of safety protocols and guidelines, along with some help from Mother Nature, allowed this year’s Turkey Shoot to be successful yet again. We had a great turnout this year and appreciate the cooperation of all those who participated. We were able to send each participant home with a basketball and provide some exciting raffle prizes because of the support from this year’s sponsors. Overall, I think everyone who attended had a great time, and it was nice to see members of our community safely recreating in our wonderful Bristol parks”.
